Law Firm Gongjon, customized legal service for foreigners at 'Blind Spot of Legal Service'
These days, number of foreigners in Korea has rapidly increased. More than 1.3 million foreigners have stayed in South Korea, and more than 100,000 foreigners have been naturalized in South Korea. 98 percent of immigrants had been naturalized last 10 years. The growth started in 2004 when the Korean government introduced foreigner employment permit system to promote not only international marriage but also naturalization of Korean Chinese migrants. The Korean government launched campaign for not only foreign workers but also multi-cultural family: Being different from foreign countries, Korea had no immigration agency not to improve quality of foreigner staying and naturalization.
Lawyer Cha Gyu-geun at law firm Gongjon (photo) has given legal service for foreigners and immigrants in South Korea based on his experience of vice commissioner at nationality and refugee section, foreigner policy headquarters, immigration bureau, Ministry of Justice that controls foreigner visa release, entry, staying, permanent residency, nationality, refugee, illegal staying in Korea, and immigration. Seven lawyer license holders are working for the section, and lawyer Cha is said to be first generation lawyer of immigration.
Lawyer Cha has given legal service for staying and/or migrant foreigners concerning immigration to be in toddler stage, and said responsibility of development of immigration legal service of practical experience and professional area. He added that foreigners did not report extension of staying period as well as changes of address that foreigners staying in Korea often produced problems.
